Located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan—surrounded by icons like the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings—The Kaufman Organization’s headquarters called for a lobby that would embody the district’s architectural legacy while delivering a distinctly contemporary impact.

Design Republic drew inspiration from the neighborhood’s storied Garment District, channeling the fluidity of fabric into a sculptural, layered design narrative. The centerpiece of the renovation is a sweeping metal screen that greets visitors upon entry—an intricate architectural gesture developed in collaboration with Amuneal. Standing 17 feet wide and 23 feet tall, the screen appears nearly seamless thanks to a carefully designed overlapping pattern that integrates into the panel’s curved form.

Complementing this bold installation is a custom, sculptural light fixture conceived with Todd Merrill and artist John Procario. The interlocking, undulating form runs the length of the lobby, offering a striking interplay of movement, material, and light. Together, these elements breathe new life into the building’s original Art Deco character while celebrating the energy and craftsmanship that define New York’s mid-century spirit.
