Phase Two of the guestroom and suite renovations at The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel, marks the continued evolution of one of New York’s most storied landmarks. Following Rosewood’s acquisition of the property, a collection of privately owned suites—each uniquely altered for residential use—were repurchased and thoughtfully reintegrated into hotel operations, requiring a design approach as individual as the suites themselves.
Design Republic built upon the aesthetic foundation established in Phase One, translating its refined design language into a fresh yet harmonious vision. The firm curated a cohesive palette of finishes, fixtures, and furnishings—each selected to meet Rosewood’s exacting standards while honoring both budgetary realities and the hotel’s storied heritage.
Rooted in Art Deco influences and the glamour of early 20th-century Manhattan, the spaces embody a quiet sophistication. Fully custom lighting, hardware, furniture, and millwork were crafted from rich, tactile materials including walnut, rift-cut cherry, and specialty veneers that catch and refract light with understated elegance. Rather than extensive architectural intervention, detailing and finishes define the character of each suite, privileging subtlety over spectacle.
Custom murals and bespoke surface treatments reference The Carlyle’s celebrated public spaces, including Bemelmans Bar, creating a seamless dialogue between public and private realms. The result is a collection of generously scaled suites—averaging approximately 650 square feet—that honor the hotel’s legacy while delivering an elevated, contemporary guest experience.
